Exceptional and very old object with superb patina of use. Gullied by time.
This type of ladder (trunk with notches and supported against a wall), which is found in all Western Africa, but especially at the Lobi and the Dogon, hence the name “Dogon ladder”, gives access to the terraces dwellings, or the small door giving access to the millet storeroom in concessions (huts forming the accomodation of the Dogon)
Here it is, taking its size into account
(1,63 m), a ladder for attic.
Dogon or Lobi,( that is, for want of information from where the object was collected, strictly impossible to establish
At the Dogon, this type of ladder was full of symbols. The top of the ladder reminds of the pillar which backs up the house of the dogon .That ones is also reminiscent of the “Nommo” Raising arms, essential feature of the Dogon cosmogony which beseeches the coming of the rain.
