Fang Byéri statue    (N°224 )

The Fang are hunters. Among the Fang, each family owns a Byéri or a reliquary box where the forbears ' bones are kept. Theses boxes were preserved by the Esa (the oldest man of the family) Fang sculptures are linked to Byeri worship. They feature bent-legged sitting men, with an elongated torso ,clasped hands holding a cup, and a stylized-features head. Above the shrine, theses statuettes used to be taken round the village to honor the dead. According to the ritual, it was taken from its support then for convenience settled on a plate or a straw headdress. Copper, much seen on this type of statuettes, gives a brilliant look which is supposed to repel foes.crackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrackcrack
